So what is TrainingUganda doing to meet these needs?

VOCATIONAL TRAINING
  1. For two years, we worked with a Vocational Centre in the rural town of Rukungiri. This provided a number of students with rudimentary business skills, launched several into their own businesses, and enabled us to learn more about how vocational training in Uganda can be improved.
  2. We are now transferring that knowledge (together with 15 years experience of vocational training in the UK) to a large school in Kampala, where it is intended to start a “Vocational University”. It will concentrate on very practical training, aimed at business and employment skills.
  3. While entrepreneurship is good, it is not for everyone. Just like the UK, at least 90% of the population would just prefer a good steady job. So the University will partner with several large employers in Kampala to ensure the courses are relevant to their business, and so provide very strong job opportunities for successful students.
  4. We then intend to spread this model of education/business partnership all around Uganda, to strengthen vocational training and job opportunities everywhere.
JOB CREATION
  1. We strongly believe that Uganda needs more manufacturing in order to progress economically and provide sustainable jobs. So we have developed a product (a Solar Water Heater) for manufacture, to provide provide job opportunities directly.
  2. This is an innovative product, which will sell at a lower price than others on the market, and will provide skilled, semi-skilled and un-skilled jobs for many.
  3. It will also set a good example of “what can be done” and encourage others to set up manufacturing.
  4. We intend to partner this business with the University, so that it, too, can be distributed around the country and provide jobs where they are needed.
OTHER PROJECTS
  1. A number of opportunities continue to arise to provide training in management, business and other areas. Some of these are “paying” work, but many are not.
  2. Currently such work is being done for several organisations which help Ugandan Coffee Farmers to get fairer prices for their produce.
